Standard Leases Coming to Ontario

Standard Ontario Lease

The rental market in Ontario has remained somewhat deregulated over the last few decades but that is rapidly changing. When the government implemented Bill 124, The Rental Fairness Act, 2017, it introduced the concept of a standard lease in Ontario.

While most provinces in Canada have a standardized lease, Ontario doesn’t. Consequently, starting April 30, 2018 the standard form must be used for all residential lease agreements.

This means that all landlords must use the exact same lease for all rental transactions. Failure to do so may result in withheld rent, penalties and fines.
